Corona Tales

Let Life Happen to You

Chus Martínez

Chus Martinez’s tales were published during the COVID-19 outbreak between March and June 2020, one per day, on the author’s instagram account. The stories, short enough to fit in an Instagram post, provided a moment of shared vulnerability in a time that has been difficult for many across the globe. They manifested a sense of interconnectedness not only among the author and her followers, but also among generations, across time, among humans living their life during an epidemic—the first tale starts with the death of her great-grandparents in January 1918, during the Spanish flu. The 100 stories, now collected in this volume, are intimate and have a powerful directness to them that seem to tell us that life happens, no matter what. They are stories of care, not only because they tell of different forms of care, but because in a time where most of us were physically confined to domestic space, or metaphorically confined behind walls of fear and anxiety, they offered an open space, a space accessible to everyone, to be together and care for each other.
